A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is required.
Key Responsibilities
1. Network Setup and Configuration: Design, set up, and configure local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and other network infrastructure to meet the organization’s requirements.
2. Network Monitoring: Continuously monitor network performance, identifying and addressing issues and ensuring optimal network uptime.
3. Network Security: Implement and enforce security measures, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption, to protect the network from cyber threats and unauthorized access.
4. Network Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve network-related problems, such as connectivity issues, slow performance, and downtime, in a timely manner.
5. Network Hardware Maintenance: Maintain and upgrade network hardware, including routers, switches, and access points, to ensure reliability and performance.
6. Software Installation and Updates: Install, configure, and update network-related software and operating systems, ensuring they operate securely and efficiently.
7. Network Documentation: Maintain detailed documentation of network configurations, diagrams, and inventory for future reference and troubleshooting.
8. Backup and Recovery Strategies: Develop and maintain data backup and recovery plans to ensure data integrity and minimize data loss in case of network failures.
9. Network Policy and Compliance: Develop and enforce network policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure regulatory compliance and security standards are met.
10. Network Upgrades and Expansion: Plan and execute network upgrades, migrations, and expansion projects to meet the organization’s changing needs.
11. Remote Access Management: Configure and manage secure remote access solutions like VPNs to enable off-site employees to access the network.
12. Network Performance Optimization: Optimize network performance through load balancing, traffic shaping, and Quality of Service (QoS) measures.
13. Wireless Network Management: Administer and secure wireless networks, including Wi-Fi access points, to ensure reliable and secure wireless connectivity.
14. Incident Response: Develop and execute incident response plans to address network security breaches and incidents.
15. Training and Support: Provide training and support to end-users and colleagues on network-related issues, best practices, and security awareness.
16. 24/7 Network Monitoring: Some network administrators may be required to provide on-call support for critical network issues outside regular working hours.
Must-have Qualifications
1. Certifications: Industry-standard certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), and other relevant networking certifications.
2. Networking Knowledge: Proficiency in fundamental networking concepts, including TCP/IP, routing, switching, subnetting, and VLANs.
3. Network Management: Hands-on experience in configuring and maintaining network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.
4. Troubleshooting Skills: The ability to diagnose and resolve network issues, including connectivity problems and network performance optimization.
5. Security Awareness: Knowledge of network security best practices, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption protocols.
6. Network Monitoring: Familiarity with network monitoring and management tools to ensure network performance and reliability.
7. Documentation Skills: The ability to create and maintain clear and organized network documentation, including network diagrams and configurations.
8. Adaptability: The capability to adapt to changing network technologies and industry standards.
9. Communication Skills: Effective communication, both written and verbal, for collaborating with team members and end-users.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Advanced Certifications: Advanced certifications like Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), or Juniper Networks Certified Internet Specialist (JNCIS) can be advantageous.
2. Wireless Networking Expertise: Proficiency in configuring and optimizing wireless networks, including knowledge of Wi-Fi standards and security protocols.
3. Virtual Private Network (VPN) Experience: Experience in setting up and managing VPNs for remote access and site-to-site connectivity.
4. Network Design Skills: Ability to design and implement network architectures that meet the organization’s specific needs.
5. Voice over IP (VoIP) Knowledge: Understanding of VoIP systems and protocols for voice and video communication over IP networks.
6. Cloud Networking: Familiarity with cloud networking concepts and experience with cloud service providers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
7. Load Balancing Expertise: Proficiency in load balancing technologies and content delivery networks (CDNs) for high availability and performance.
8. Network Automation Skills: Knowledge of scripting and automation tools to streamline network provisioning and management.
9. Project Management Skills: Experience in managing networking projects, from planning to implementation, and possibly leading project teams.
10. Vendor Relationships: Strong vendor management skills for negotiating contracts and maintaining relationships with network equipment and service providers.
